Ali Sabzi Khoshraftar

I am an EngD student and part of the WP2 titled Data Platform and Digital Twin Development for Steel Infrastructures. I am working on creating 3D Digital Twins (DTs) of steel bridges using various sensor data and structural performance models (SPMs). My work focuses on exploring the integration and visualization of the data and models as part of the Digital Twin of steel bridges. Augmented Reality (AR) is of particular interest in increasing the speed and reliability of inspection and maintenance by assisting the personnel on the field.

I have always been fascinated by how computers can see, learn, and interact with the world. That is why I pursued Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Extended Reality (XR) as my main areas of interest and expertise. My academic background is in Electrical Engineering, where I obtained both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. I have worked on both academic and industrial projects that involved image analysis, sediment tracking, deep learning, and person recognition. I have used Python and MATLAB as my main programming languages.

Most steel bridges in the Netherlands were built after the 1960s and are aging. These aging steel bridges require more attention and effective maintenance to ensure the safety of passengers and to decrease maintenance costs. However, traditional methods are slow, difficult, prone to human errors, and rely on a limited number of experts. Thus, I hope to facilitate the Digital Transformation of steel bridge maintenance by assisting in the development of a Digital Twin for steel bridges, which can increase the reliability and effectiveness of maintenance by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies into bridge assessment and maintenance.

I am very excited to work on this expansive and multidisciplinary project that combines state-of-the-art technologies with an important industrial problem and a noble cause to improve the safety and performance of infrastructures, and I believe my experience with AI and AR for data analysis and visualization will contribute to this project. I am also looking forward to collaborating with the creative and knowledgeable academic partners and the experienced and resourceful industrial partners.
